Calvary House is a residential discipleship ministry for men who have an evident desire to follow Christ. We minister to Christian men who are dealing with life-controlling struggles, such as drug and alcohol addictions. Our residents are seeking to be overcomers through Christ, but they need a more structured atmosphere for spiritual victory than regular church services and non-residential ministries can provide. Simply stated, we work with those who have already made a profession for Christ but have experienced difficulty conquering certain stronghold sins.
MAKING DISCIPLES
In Mark 8:34-35, Jesus tells His disciples:
"Whoever desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel will save it."
Calvary House is structured as a 10 to 12 month residential ministry, beginning with a strict structure that gradually becomes more flexible. In the first phase of the ministry, residents begin learning discipline and maintaining accountability by serving in a Christian-based work environment during the day and attending Bible studies and other classes at night.
In the second phase, residents are given more freedoms, along with increased responsibilities, as they demonstrate attitudes and actions reflective of spiritual growth. Some of the basic goals of Calvary House are:
- To train residents how to face life's
challenges, conflicts and temptations
in a Christ-like manner
- To provide an opportunity for residents to
grow while learning to make good choices
- To develop a pattern of Christian living
that glorifies God.
Once a resident graduates, he may choose to move on or to remain in a graduate phase, which is designed to spiritually and practically prepare the resident for departure.
REFERRAL BASED
Because Calvary House is not a crisis shelter, all potential residents must personally call Calvary House at 727-347-7335 to schedule an in-person interview. Family and friends may direct an individual to call Calvary House, but he must schedule the interview himself. Once the interview is conducted, a prayerful decision will be made within a couple of days.
If the individual is incarcerated, he must write a letter to the address listed below, expressing his desire for involvement in a Christian discipleship ministry. After we receive his letter, our prison minister will contact him. Men who are not accepted by Calvary House will be guided to other appropriate facilities, using our referral database, where they can receive the help best suited to meet their needs.
